Welcome!
Hello and welcome to the Susty Gorl Digest!
Hello and welcome to Environmentalist Digest!
Hello and welcome to the newsletter that’s going to save the world!
Hmm, okay so clearly I’m gonna need some help with the title of this newsletter, so please reach out if you have any ideas 🥵
If you don’t know me, Hi! My name is Emma Jane and I’m an environmental communicator, writer, TikToker, jokester, and someone who is passionate about being transparent in her journey to help solve the climate crisis. I currently live in Brooklyn, NY and am a frequent farmers-marketer. I’m 23 and was born and raised in Los Angeles, California.
When I was in high school I wanted to become a timpanist in the New York Philharmonic, so I went to a boarding school in the middle of the woods in Michigan to train to do just that. I went on to attend one of the best music conservatories in the country for percussion so I could continue to pursue my dream.
Halfway through sophomore year I had a breakdown. Like, a serious meltdown in a private lesson where I couldn’t stop crying. I had come to the realization through the help of my professor that I actually didn’t like being a percussionist enough to want to do it full time (that is the most cliff notes version I can give you). I dropped out, worked at a restaurant and met a bunch of cool people, then transferred to The New School in NYC where I just received my Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Nonfiction Writing. 💁🏼♀️👩🏼🎓
So, all of that to say is I come from a place of doing something very intensely and with a lot of purpose. Luckily, with environmentalism I don’t have to be locked in a practice room for 10 hours a day.
While I also feel confident in my education as an Environmental Studies major as well as my own education on these topics, I’m never perfect and am constantly learning and unlearning. My goal is to share the process of unlearning and learning about a global problem like climate change in a way that I feel empowered to make change in my own life and encourage those around me to do the same.
This is a place, a safe place, for individuals like yourselves to figure out where you want to be in this movement, what you want to support, and how you want to support it. There is no judgment here. I am not here to tell you what to do, I am here to encourage ideas and actionable ways of thinking. I’m figuring it out myself, and I want to share the ups and downs of doing just that.
And if I ever do say something that is judgemental or unfair or just not nice, please, p l e a s e call me out on it.
That’s accountability.
And that’s what we’re to do. Hold people accountable. Hold a lot of people, and companies, and corporations, and businesses accountable.
Thank you so SO much for joining me, and I’m excited to share my journey with you while working towards a community that’s creating collective action in the face of the climate crisis.
You’re great, and I’m so happy you’re here.
<3,
Emma Jane
P.s. relax your shoulders.
